La Ferme du Biéreau - Louvain-la-Neuve

A tribute concert to composers who were victims of censorship under the Third Reich.

La Ferme du Biéreau Place Polyvalente, 1348 Louvain-la-Neuve Belgium

The program is built around three perspectives: a piece representing the art rejected by the Nazis (Entartete Musik) - the magnificent Serenade op. 24 by Arnold Schoenberg; rarely performed vocal works by two composers who died in concentration camps - the Drei jiddische Lieder by Viktor Ullmann and the Seven Songs in Folk Styles by Pavel Haas; and a contemporary piece composed in homage to the victims of the Holocaust, Où est la plaie? by Brussels-based composer Adrien Tsilogiannis, set to the poem Les Charniers by Eugène Guillevic. The musical worlds are varied but all highly expressive, blending modesty, lightness, pain, and existential questions. The broad sonic palette of the instrumental ensemble adds to the richness of the musical narrative.
